Job Title: Assistant Head Nurse
Location: Gilgit, Pakistan

The Aga Khan Health Service, Pakistan (AKHS, P) is seeking an experienced Assistant Head Nurse, reporting to the Manager Nursing & Midwifery.
Summary of the Role
The Assistant Head Nurse supports in managing the day-to-day clinical administrative and operational activities of the assigned nursing unit to ensure patient care activities, maintaining compliance with institutional policies and regulatory standards and promoting continuous quality improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Delivers safe evidence-based and patient-centered nursing care in accordance with institutional policies Nursing standards and Physician orders.
- Admits transfers and discharges patients as per physician’s instructions and established protocols.
- Participates actively in physicians' rounds communicates patients' progress and ensures timely implementation of physicians' orders.
- Monitors patient’s clinical conditions and promptly reports significant changes to the treating Physician, Assistant Manager Nursing and Manager Nursing and Midwifery.
- Calculates medication dosages accurately administers medications safely and monitors patients for therapeutic outcomes and adverse reactions.
- Administers blood and blood products safely in accordance with hospital transfusion protocols.
- Prepares and administers infusions as prescribed by physicians.
- Maintains accurate intake and output records and other required patient monitoring documentation.
- Provides basic surgical and wound care following approved clinical guidelines.
- Performs and leads Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and responds effectively during medical emergencies.
- Assists the Head Nurse and Nurse Manager in the day-to-day administrative operational and supervisory management of the assigned nursing unit.
- Assumes responsibility for managing the nursing unit in the absence of the Head Nurse or when delegated.
- Supervises and supports Registered Nurses Nursing Assistants and other nursing personnel to ensure quality patient care.
- Facilitates orientation mentoring and competency development of newly recruited Registered Nurses.
- Implements and monitors compliance with Nursing Quality Assurance standards patient safety initiatives customer satisfaction programs ISO 9001:2015 policies and procedures infection prevention and control standards and patient confidentiality requirements.
- Ensures proper bedside handover of patients including clinical status medications equipment stock and crash cart readiness.
- Verifies the availability and proper storage of medications including departmental refrigerator stock where applicable.
- Ensures crash carts emergency equipment and essential supplies remain fully stocked and functional.
- Reports incidents complaints safety concerns and clinical risks promptly to the Head Nurse and Nurse Manager and participates in corrective actions.
- Maintains complete accurate and timely nursing documentation in accordance with hospital policies and professional standards.
- Records and documents all utilized supplies medications and consumables accurately in the relevant systems or registers.
- Monitors the functionality of medical equipment and reports faults promptly to the Maintenance Department or Hospital Administration for timely repair.
- Provides moral support health education and counselling to patients and their families as appropriate.
- Promotes compassionate care patient dignity privacy confidentiality and service excellence throughout the patient journey.
- Communicates effectively with physicians multidisciplinary teams patients and families to ensure coordinated patient care.
- Records minutes of departmental meetings and circulates them to relevant stakeholders in a timely manner.
- Escalates operational clinical or administrative issues to the Head Nurse or Nurse Manager for appropriate action.
- Arranges capacity building plans for Nursing staff and records.
- Performs any other tasks as assigned by the Line Manager.
Eligibility Criteria
- Minimum of a 3-year Diploma in General Nursing, or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) from a recognized institution with a valid Pakistan Nursing Council (PNC) license.
- More than 2 years of relevant experience, preferably within healthcare systems or large service organizations
- I/V Cannulation and Medication Administration.
- Can understand Infection Control and Nursing Protocol.
- Demonstrate knowledge about Lactation Management.
- ACLS, PALS and BLS certified.
- Having advanced critical Care skills.
- Results-driven, ethical and adaptable professional with a strong service and stakeholder focus.
- Strong integrity with the sensitivity to manage confidential information.
- Demonstrates superior organizational skills and the agility to multitask and assume changing strategic responsibilities in a dynamic environment.
- Possesses strong integrity, intellectual humility and demonstrable expertise in navigating ambiguity and constant change.
- Shows resilience, flexibility and perseverance, especially during challenging periods.
