1. Background
The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center, is seeking two proactive and motivated interns to support research and field activities related to surface and groundwater monitoring under the ongoing FCDO-funded Water Resources Accountability Programme (WRAP) in Punjab. The internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in field-based water resource monitoring, participatory research, and advanced instrumentation for agricultural and environmental management. Based at IWMI’s Field Office in Okara, interns will actively contribute to data collection, monitoring, and analysis developing evidence-based solutions for sustainable water management in agriculture. Over the one-year program, interns will gain technical skills, practical field experience, and exposure to collaborative work with farmers, researchers, and policymakers, building a strong foundation for a career in water resource management, environmental engineering, and agricultural sustainability.
2. Key Responsibilities:
• Assist in field activities including installation, maintenance, and monitoring of hydrological and agricultural instruments (soil moisture sensors, CTD divers, water quality monitoring systems).
• Collect and process surface water, groundwater, and agricultural data, including crop growth, irrigation schedules, and yield records.
• Support the development, calibration, and validation of water resource models (e.g., WEAP) and assist in GIS mapping of monitoring sites and canal networks.
• Contribute to water quality sampling, laboratory analysis, and monitoring of nature-based wastewater treatment systems such as floating wetlands.
• Engage with farmers and local stakeholders to build capacity in water use efficiency, irrigation scheduling, and conservation practices.
• Maintain accurate records of groundwater extraction data for integration into the water budget.
• Assist in the installation and data collection of soil moisture sensors at designated sites in the district Okara.
• Assist in compiling and analyzing datasets, preparing technical notes, and contributing to project reports and presentations.
• Contribute to the technical reports and presentations summarizing project activities, findings, and recommendations.
• Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and ethical protocols during all field and community activities.
• Perform other related duties related to water resource management, hydrology, agriculture, or wastewater treatment.
3. Required Qualifications and Skills:
• A recently completed aster’s Water Resource Management/Hydrology/Agriculture, or a related field.
• Strong understanding of hydrological and/or agricultural systems.
• Proficiency in data analysis and visualization tools such as R and ArcGIS. • Prior experience or familiarity with water resource modelling software (e.g., WEAP, HEC HMS, SWAT, or similar).
• Ability to use scientific instruments for field data collection (e.g., flow meters, ADCP, soil moisture sensors, water quality testing kits).
• Ability to conduct field surveys and collect groundwater/surface water, and agricultural data.
• Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment • Willingness to travel to field sites in District Okara
4. Duration of the Assignment:
The interns will be hired for the above tasks for a period of one year at the IWMI Field Office in Okara with travel to other project sites as required.
